"You asked about caring for people I don’t even know. But can I tell you the thing I’m learning most with this disease? The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in. Let it come in. We think we don’t deserve love, we think if we let it in we’ll become too soft. But love is the only rational act."
"People think being alone makes you lonely, but I don’t think that’s true. Being surrounded by the wrong people is the loneliest thing in the world."
"You can be lonely even when you are loved by many people, since you are still not anybody’s one and only."
"I like beautiful melodies telling me terrible things.
"I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see."
"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
"All my life I’ve thought I needed someone to complete me, now I know I need to belong to myself.
"I dream of painting and then I paint my dream."
"To live in this world,
you must be able
to do three things
to love what is mortal;
to hold it
against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go."
you must be able
to do three things
to love what is mortal;
to hold it
against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go."
"I was starting to think, maybe you need to feel your way more through life—just turn off the lights and follow your senses, even if you stumble once in a while. Maybe that’s what falling in love is like. Just feeling your way through the darkness until you find something solid to hold on to."
"How right that the body changed over time, becoming a gallery of scars, a canvas of experience, a testament to life and one’s capacity to endure it."
"The most important thing in life is to stop saying ‘I wish’ and start saying ‘I will.’ Consider nothing impossible, then treat possibilities as probabilities."
I no longer believe that we can keep silent. We never really do, mind you. In one way or another we articulate what has happened to us through the kind of people we become."
"I told her once I wasn’t good at anything. She told me survival is a talent."
"It may have been in pieces, but I gave you the best of me."
"Sometimes it was hard to express how much you loved someone. You said the words, but you could never quite capture the depth of it. You could never quite hold someone tightly enough."
La neige est blanche comme ton cou,
La neige est blanche come tes genoux.
Ta main est froide comme la neige,
Ton coeur est froid comme la neige.
La neige est blanche come tes genoux.
Ta main est froide comme la neige,
Ton coeur est froid comme la neige.
Remember, remember, this is now, and now, and now. Live it, feel it, cling to it. I want to become acutely aware of all I've taken for granted"
It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.”
Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much as your own unguarded thoughts.
Your weight does not determine any of the following:
*How beautiful you are
*What clothes you’re allowed to wear
*How you deserve to be treated
*Your value as a person
“I want to change the world
Instead, I sleep”
Instead, I sleep”
Plenty of tears were supplied
My eyes are wrung out and dry as a bone
My eyes are wrung out and dry as a bone
I wish I could believe in something bigger
More than these trees, these winds, these oceans
I wish I could believe what they tell me”
More than these trees, these winds, these oceans
I wish I could believe what they tell me”
Sometimes you forget why you do the things you do, and then, someone reminds you.
You’re at another turning point in your life, but everything could seem more important now than it actually is
"I also hate people to ask cheerfully how you are when they know you’re feeling like hell and expect you to say fine."
I wonder how many people I’ve looked at all my life and never seen.
There are those who say that life is like a book, with chapters for each event in your life and a limited number of pages on which you can spend your time. But I prefer to think that a book is like a life, particularly a good one, which is well to worth staying up all night to finish
You like someone who can’t like you back because unrequited love can be survived in a way that once-requited love cannot
Behind every beautiful thing, there’s some kind of pain
I would die for you. But I won’t live for you
I feel shame, not for the
wrong things I have done
but for the right things that
I have failed to do
wrong things I have done
but for the right things that
I have failed to do
I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.
And maybe we have to break everything to make something better out of ourselves.
You say that you love rain, but you open your umbrella when it rains. You say that you love the sun, but you find a shadow spot when the sun shines. You say that you love the wind, but you close your windows when wind blows. This is why I am afraid, you say that you love me too.
In Greek, “nostalgia” literally means “the pain from an old wound”. It’s a twinge in your heart, far more powerful than memory alone. This device isn’t a spaceship, it’s a time machine. It goes backwards and forwards, it takes us to a place where we ache to go again.
I never knew until that moment how bad it could hurt to lose something you never really had
Don’t cling to things, because everything is impermanent.
Unhappy memories are persistent. They’re specific, and it’s the details that refuse to leave us alone. Though a happy memory may stay with you just as long as one that makes you miserable, what you remember softens over time. What you recall is simply that you were happy, not necessarily the individual moments that brought about your joy. But the memory of something painful does just the opposite. It retains its original shape, all bony fingers and pointy elbows. Every time it returns, you get a quick poke in the eye or jab in the stomach. The memory of being unhappy has the power to hurt us long after the fact. We feel the injury anew each and every time we think of it.
One day you’ll wake up and find that the pain’s still there but it doesn’t hurt quite so much
I do not care what car you drive. Where you live. If you know someone who knows someone who knows someone. If your clothes are this years cutting edge. If you are A list or B list or never heard of you list. If your trust fund is unlimited. I only care about the words that flutter from your mind. They are the only thing you own. The only thing I will remember you by. I will not fall in love with your bones or skin. I will not fall in love with the places you have been. I will not fall in love with anything but the words that flutter from your extraordinary mind.
I never think of the future. It comes soon enough.
Find what you love and let it kill you.
I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up all alone. It’s not. The worst thing in life, is to end up with people who make you feel all alone.
When things break, it’s not the actual breaking that prevents them from getting back together again. It’s because a little piece gets lost — the two remaining ends couldn’t fit together even if they wanted to. The whole shape has changed.
When I looked at you, my life made sense. Even the bad things made sense. They were necessary to make you possible.
Admit it. You aren’t like them. You’re not even close. You may occasionally dress yourself up as one of them, watch the same mindless television shows as they do, maybe even eat the same fast food sometimes. But it seems that the more you try to fit in, the more you feel like an outsider, watching the “normal people” as they go about their automatic existences. For every time you say club passwords like “Have a nice day” and “Weather’s awful today, eh?”, you yearn inside to say forbidden things like “Tell me something that makes you cry” or “What do you think deja vu is for?”. Face it, you even want to talk to that girl in the elevator. But what if that girl in the elevator (and the balding man who walks past your cubicle at work) are thinking the same thing? Who knows what you might learn from taking a chance on conversation with a stranger? Everyone carries a piece of the puzzle. Nobody comes into your life by mere coincidence. Trust your instincts. Do the unexpected. Find the others.
Common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darknes
The only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive.
The world is very quiet without you around.
And that’s the thing about people who mean everything they say. They think everyone else does too.
I have a theory that every time you make an important choice, the part of you left behind continues the other life you could have had.
Our lives are defined by opportunities, even the ones we miss.
That’s who you really like. The people you can think out loud in front of.
A love like that was a serious illness, an illness from which you never entirely recover.
The secret to happiness is low expectations.
Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.
The tragedy of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait so long to begin it.
Maybe there’s something you’re afraid to say, or someone you’re afraid to love, or somewhere you’re afraid to go. It’s gonna hurt. It’s gonna hurt because it matters.
Everything you ever love will reject you or die.
Don’t wish me happiness. I don’t expect to be happy all the time… It’s gotten beyond that somehow. Wish me courage and strength and a sense of humor. I will need them all
We are more often frightened than hurt; and we suffer more from imagination than from reality
The past doesn’t matter. People cling to it because it allows them to ignore the present.
People fall so in love with their pain, they can’t leave it behind. The same as the stories they tell. We trap ourselves.
All moments, past, present, and future, always have existed, always will exist. It’s just an illusion here on Earth that one moment follows another one, like beads on a string, and that once that moment is gone it is gone forever.
I don’t want to earn my living; I want to live
Only after disaster can we be resurrected. It’s only after you’ve lost everything that you’re free to do anything. Nothing is static, everything is evolving, everything is falling apart.
Don’t gain the world and lose your soul. Wisdom is better than silver and gold.
The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence.
No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world
We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.
It’s the tragedy of loving, you can’t love anything more than something you miss.
People will show you who they are, but we ignore it because we want them to be who we want them to be.
I hope you never have to think about anything as much as I think about you.
Nowadays you can go anywhere in the world in a few hours, and nothing is fabulous any more.
Expectation is the root of all heartache
You know how they say, ‘you can’t live without love’? Well, tell them oxygen is even more important
Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.
You’re a different human being to everybody you meet
The one you love and the one who loves you are never, ever the same person.
Saying you’re happy isn’t the same as being happy
Why didn’t I learn to treat everything like it was the last time? My greatest regret was how much I believed in the future.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.
You’re going to come across people in your life who will say all the right words at all the right times. But in the end, it’s always their actions you should judge them by. It’s actions, not words, that matter.
